"Dash was shot on expired—very expired—and poorly-stored 16mm film using a Beaulieu R16, the first 16mm camera I ever owned. It’s beautiful to look at, a bit temperamental at times but small and light, the perfect camera to stick in your backpack when you are skiing.
I refer to “Dash” as my accidental film because it was completely unplanned. I was heading out to visit a friend in Colorado and on a whim I decided to pack a camera figuring I would shoot some home movies. And then I spent a day on the mountain with Dash and got inspired.
The beauty of not planning is that I didn’t put any pressure on myself and I felt completely free while I was making it. It really came together in the edit—the faded and grainy quality of the expired stock, the life in Dash’s voice and his inspired words take you on a little journey in under three minutes." - Cheryl Hess
