This week we interviewed Film Club member Tanishaa Rao who sent us a collection of photos from Philly, New York City, and Boston. Scroll down to see her pictures and to read the interview!
PL: What got you interested in photography?
TR: With photography, it offered me the unique ability to direct what I wanted to capture, allowing me to tell stories through images, and it was also the desire to freeze any moment in frame.
PL: What type of camera do you shoot with?
TR: For my digital stuff, I shoot with a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera and, for film I shoot on a compact 35mm point-and-shoot film camera.
PL: When taking pictures, what are some objects or elements or feelings within a scene that inspire you to take a photo?
TR: I personally love capturing the way light interacts with architecture, streets and people - I think that adds so much drama and depth to photos.
PL: Of the pictures you submitted, can you share an interesting story about one?
TR: It was taken in center city and i was constantly crossing the street across from what i wanted to capture, waiting for the right moment and after a good 10-15 minutes of doing so i finally had the perfect composition but i was a second too late and the horns blared at me as i ran before i almost got run over and i was worried the image was going to be blurry or over exposed but it turned out just perfect.
PL: What do you enjoy most about film and/or digital photography and what is challenging about it?
TR: Film photography teaches me patience, because there’s so many limitations and it encourages me to think carefully about each shot, considering composition, lighting and the subject. The delayed gratification also plays such a big role in my love for shooting on film.
PL: Do you have any goals or ideas of how you want to grow this collection of photographs?
TR: Every roll I shoot, I pick a certain theme I want to capture, with this one I wanted to capture city architecture and combine them with street photography; so all of these images were taken in Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. I think I want to continue to build more on this theme, along with trying out a different film to capture an entirely different style to just experiment with it.
