Stills at Play explores what happens when motion is stilled and sound is silenced. Curated in collaboration with Philadelphia Film Society, this exhibition celebrates the distinct visual language of five Philadelphia filmmakers through still images drawn directly from one of their films.
Each film is represented by 24 frames — a nod to the 24 frames that typically make up one second of cinema. These frames are presented as a grid of images rather than the film as a moving sequence. The resulting experience is cinema without the distraction (or guidance) of sound or movement.
What emerges when a film is reduced to its visual core? Do the images speak differently when isolated from a narrative? Stills at Play encourages us to encounter cinema at its most fundamental element.
Featured Filmmakers & Films: Joshua Afiriyie (Simmer), Cheryl Hess (Dash, Age 92, Snowboarder), Aliyah Jefferies (Be Back By 3), Saladin White II (Muscle Memory), Douglas Williams (Lazybones)
