PL: What got you interested in photography?

HF: I got interested in photography in middle school when I took a dark room film elective. I was drawn to the process of developing film and ended up loving the creativity of taking photos. Photography changed the way I look at the world around me and allows me to be present in my environment. It’s a meditative practice that allows me to see everything from a different angle and find creativity in everyday life. I was shooting digital for a while but found my way back to film in college.

PL:  What type of camera do you shoot with?

HF: I shoot with a Pentax Honeywell Spotmatic and a Fuji Zoom Date 140.

PL: When taking pictures, what are some objects or elements or feelings within a scene that inspire you to take a photo?

HF: My eye is drawn to symmetry, color matching, and movement. I love using people as subjects in a larger frame, whether that is planned or in the moment. When I’m in Philly or traveling, I try to explore different angles and see places in new ways through my camera. I try to capture feelings of warmth and nostalgia in the scenes I shoot, especially of my friends and family. I try to keep a camera with me at all times for when inspiration randomly strikes.

PL: Of the pictures you submitted, can you share an interesting story about one?

HF: This photo at the Phillies game really captures the essence of Philly sports. I took this at the 2025 Home Opener after Kyle Schwarber hit his third home run of the game! I love that everytime you look at this photo you can spot a different person in the crowd reacting. I’ve spent most of my life in Philly and it has such a special energy. You can see the joy and cheer jump out of the picture.

PL: What do you enjoy most about digital/film photography and what is challenging about it?

HF: What I love most about film is the delayed gratification, intentionality, and the warmth conveyed through the photos. The way film can capture memories and feelings with so much depth is unlike digital. Photography is a meditative process for me. It helps me stay present and is truly the art of noticing.

It’s definitely a pro and con how unpredictable it can be. It’s the best feeling in the world when a photo comes out as a surprise or exactly how you planned. On the other hand, super disappointmenting when a photo you were excited for doesn’t turn out. Or worse… a blank roll. It’s fun to play around with colors, various ISO film stocks, and double exposures. It’s all a part of how special shooting on film is. High risk high reward!

PL: Do you have any goals or ideas of how you want to grow this collection of photographs?

HF: I’d love to experiment more with double exposing film and layering. I included one of my recent (accidental) double exposed pictures from the MoMA in NYC. It’s such a cool creative process of film that can result in unreal and psychadelic photos. I would also love to connect with more Philly photographers and collaborate!
