This week’s Member Moment features work by Alba Juliao, who takes photos that feel romantic and abstract. Scroll down to see her pictures and to read the interview!

PL: What got you interested in photography?
AJ: The connection between image and experience is what caught me. It became a way to explore perception and how light, texture, and perspective can shift how we understand what we’re seeing.

PL: What type of camera do you shoot with?

PL: When taking pictures, what are some objects or elements or feelings within a scene that inspire you to take a photo?
AJ: Where light changes the way something feels; reflections, textures, shadows, or colors that shift all depending on the time and place. How we perceive can feel real but may also only exist in a state of observation or imagination. I’m interested in capturing moments that feel slightly uncertain, where perception and reality overlap.

PL: Of the pictures you submitted, can you share an interesting story about one?
AJ: This photo was taken on a walk in Lisbon, hot day, bright day, and the city was vibrating with shapes and shadows everywhere.

PL: What do you enjoy most about digital/film photography and what is challenging about it?
AJ: I enjoy both film and digital photography for different reasons. I tend to favor film since it was the first format I ever used, and I’m drawn to how much you can continue to morph and manipulate it in the darkroom.
