How to Keep Your Film & Cameras Safe During Summer Travel

Lessons

Summer is all about road trips, beach days, and travel adventures. If you’re packing film gear along for the ride, you’ll want to take a few extra steps to keep your film and camera safe from the elements because nothing kills the vibe like ruined film or a jammed shutter.

Here’s what to look out for and how to protect your gear while still getting the shot.

Heat is Your Film’s Frenemy

Film is sensitive to high temperatures. Leaving rolls in a hot car or direct sun can cause unwanted fogging or color shifts. If you’re shooting in a hot climate, store film in a small cooler bag or keep it in the shade. And once it’s exposed, treat it like fresh food — get it developed as soon as you can for best results (we’ve got you covered on that).

Airport X-Rays

TSA scanners are generally okay for film under ISO 800, but multiple scans can still build up damage. To be safe, ask for a hand check at security — especially if you're traveling with higher ISO film or have a lot of rolls. Just stash your film in a clear plastic bag to make the request easier. Don’t check film in your luggage — that scanner is way stronger.

Sand & Salt: Keep It Out

Beach trips are amazing, but sand and saltwater are camera kryptonite. Keep your camera in a zip-up bag or padded case when not in use, and wipe it down gently after shooting. A microfiber cloth is your best friend here. Be especially careful changing rolls at the beach — try to do it indoors or back in your car to avoid getting gritty particles inside the camera.

Pro Tip: Label & Log

Traveling with multiple rolls? Label them and jot down where and when you shot each one. It helps when it’s time to develop — and we love seeing the stories behind your shots. Wherever you're headed, we’re here when you get back.

Drop off your film or mail it in, and we’ll take it from there. Our printing services can help you make the perfect summer photo gallery so you can showcase your best shots from those long, warmer days.

Happy travels and happy shooting!
