Taken in 1961 in Bagheria Palermo, it is a wholesome and raw moment of summer between siblings. Zia Giuseppina on the right and Zia Maria on the left, caught mid-laugh against the plaster wall of the family home. The courtyard backdrop and the patterned dresses are so of-the-era, so unmistakably Italian summer. Guiseppina’s got a baby bottle raised like she means business, and Maria’s laughing too hard to fight her off.
It’s a small, silly gesture, but it says a lot – the baby bottle is a stand-in prop for the whole afternoon, the same crowded, noisy circle of family that a single photo can only hint at. Their brother, the family photographer, just happened to have the camera out at the perfect second. You can picture him laughing right along with them as he snapped the photo.
The teasing feels like an old joke between them, a callback to decades earlier than when the photo was taken. It’s sweet that it’s still here to see, sixty-some years later. The moment itself is long gone, but the joy and familial spirit lives on.
