What We Liked: Inspired by a poem excerpt from Gustavo Hernandez, this image best captured the feeling behind the lines. The poem evokes a nostalgia for childhood summers, where responsibility evaporates as soon as the last school bell rings. So, with that in mind, we enjoyed how the image features blankets with the three primary colors, which feel reminiscent of school years. The girl’s dress pops out vibrantly, calling clear attention to her. It’s her summer! And the sun-screened smile on her face says she’s loving every minute of it.
“Summer, You’re a Boneyard
and you used to be The Richard Bey Show
and my sister’s spaghetti. Under a friar plum tree,
a simplified reading of ‘The Argonautica.’
You kept me full and entertained. I was that kind
of round child. Gorging on what was left over.
I didn’t want a real burden, my own ship or story.”
