Time Capsule: Honeymooning on a Sand Dune, 1968

Time Capsule

Looking at this photo, we can almost hear the oohs and ahhs, the laughter, the teasing between this couple. It’s a tiny, wonderfully energetic moment between two people who seem completely at ease in each other’s company.

The brilliant blue sky, the endless white sand, the absence of anything recognizable in the frame. It’s difficult to pinpoint exactly where they are. The image becomes less about a particular place and more about a particular feeling. For a moment, there are only the two of them, the sand, the sky, and the sounds of joy.

This photograph was submitted by their grandchild, who said it was their favorite from a collection of nearly 3,000 slides. It captures their grandparents on their honeymoon in Rio de Janeiro, at the beginning of “two lives that were well lived.” It’s a split second of a much larger story. Two people who chose to spend a life together: playing, falling down, getting back up, and pulling each other along for the ride.
