What We Liked: A thoughtful portrait can allow for an intimate moment between the viewer and the subject. Both the photographer and the subject play an equally important role; facial gestures, clothing, poses, lighting, and framing all come into play when creating the photograph. Here, the photo is framed by curtains which ground us in one space while we gaze into a neighboring window to peer into someone else’s life. The subject, a man wearing a lucha libre mask, gazes out into the street while holding his cup of coffee—pinky up. If the portrait is candid, it speaks to the strangely mannered character of the man, and if it is posed, the humorous.
